What it is for
What you will be able to do.
The TVDE Driver Certificate is valid for 5 years. To renew it, you take the 8-hour periodic training course and apply for renewal through IMT Online before it expires.
You apply for renewal through IMT Online, from 6 months before expiry. You need to have successfully completed the 8-hour periodic training and passed a final IMT assessment (Ordinance no. 344/2024/1).

How do I renew the CMTVDE?
You successfully complete the 8-hour periodic training and the final IMT assessment. Then you apply for renewal through IMT Online, from 6 months before expiry.
When should I renew?
Before your CMTVDE expires. You can apply from 6 months before.
Can I renew after it expires?
No. If the certificate expires before renewal, it can no longer be renewed and you have to take the full initial training again.
How many hours is the renewal?
8 hours of periodic training.
Is there an assessment?
Yes. Renewing the CMTVDE requires passing a final IMT assessment, under Ordinance no. 344/2024/1.
Which documents do I need?
Valid CMTVDE, category B licence with Group 2 endorsement, criminal record certificate and the periodic training certificate.
How do I apply at IMT?
Only through IMT Online, before your current certificate expires, paying the €30 fee.
How long is the new CMTVDE valid?
5 years.
What changed in TVDE law in 2026?
Law no. 59/2026 of 25 August came into force on 1 September 2026. The main changes: checking functional command of Portuguese in the initial training; taxis may also operate on TVDE platforms if they meet the same requirements; new rules on maximum vehicle age, with a wider exception for fully electric vehicles; changes to the identification sticker, in-vehicle video recording and data sharing; and adjustments to penalties and dynamic pricing. The 5-year validity of the CMTVDE, the 50 hours of initial training and the 30-question test already applied before and do not come from this law.
