Professional driver at the wheel of a passenger bus, with passengers seated behind

What it is for

What you will be able to do.

To work as a professional bus or coach driver, you need a D or D+E driving licence and also the driver qualification (CAM).

The path is: CAM training → IMT test, with the CAM issued on the spot if you pass → Code 95 recorded on your licence, arranged by the school → professional work.

The licence and the CAM are different things: the licence allows you to drive the vehicle; the CAM and Code 95 allow you to do it as a profession.

What is the CAM?

It is the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Certificado de Aptidão para Motorista): the mandatory qualification to drive buses and coaches as a profession.

What is Code 95?

It is the entry on the driving licence proving your driver qualification is up to date, for residents of Portugal.

Do I need the CAM to drive buses and coaches for work?

Yes, to drive buses and coaches as a profession.

Do I need the category D licence first?

Not necessarily. You can get the licence at the same time as the CAM initial training, as long as you have a learner's permit.

Can I do the CAM and the licence at the same time?

Yes. At the same time as the CAM initial training, and with a learner's permit, you can get a D1, D1E, D or DE licence from age 21.

I'm not Portuguese. Can I get the CAM?

Yes. If you are from another EU country, you need habitual residence in Portugal. If you are from outside the EU, you need a stay or residence permit in Portugal.

Is there an IMT test?

Yes. After the initial training you take a test at IMT. The fee is €80 and, if you pass, the CAM is issued on the spot.

How do I get Code 95 recorded on my licence?

Once you have your CAM, you hand in the documents at the school and we arrange for Code 95 to be recorded on your driving licence. The fee is €60.

How long is it valid?

5 years. You renew it with the 35-hour periodic training.

Does this CAM also cover goods transport?

No. This course is for passenger transport. For goods transport, see CAM Goods.
