Optional training
Tutor training is not compulsory.
This training is a service from MM Ouressa to help tutors better understand their role and supervise the learner more safely, calmly and effectively.
It is not training that the law requires in order to act as a tutor.

- It is optional: 3 hours to prepare you better to supervise the learner. It is not a compulsory cost for supervised driving.

How it works
Supervising someone who is learning to drive is very different from simply sitting beside them. In 3 hours we help you understand your role as a tutor, how to guide the learner and how to make learning safer and more gradual.

Supervised driving is part of the learner's training at the driving school and must meet the applicable legal requirements.

The tutor complements the learning. They do not replace the training given by the driving school.
Legal requirements
What you need to know
Rules revised in 2026. We check each case with you before you start.
- What it is
- A way for a category B learner to gain driving experience supervised by a tutor, in addition to training at the driving school.
- Who can be a tutor
- Anyone holding a category B licence issued in Portugal or another EU Member State at least 10 years ago, or recognised by the Portuguese authorities for at least 5 years, provided it was issued in the country of origin at least 10 years ago. The tutor cannot be a driving instructor or examiner.
- Tutor's record
- Present the Driver Offence Record certificate (RIC).
- Learner
- Enrolled at a driving school for category B, and meeting the minimum age for category B.
- School
- Notifies IMT of the choice of a tutor before starting, identifying the tutor. The learner can only take the test 90 days after that notification.
- Where to drive
- Driving on motorways and carrying passengers are not allowed. Busy roads and times should be avoided, and local councils may set areas where supervised driving is not allowed.
- Vehicle
- Identified with a sticker and with the handbrake within the tutor's reach.
- Insurance
- The compulsory motor third-party liability insurance, of the vehicle or the tutor, must cover damage caused by the learner.
- Liability
- The tutor is liable for damage and offences committed by the learner during supervised driving, unless they result from the learner disobeying the tutor's instructions.

Optional training — it is not required to act as a tutor.
Who can be a tutor?
Anyone who has held a category B licence for at least 10 years (issued in Portugal or the EU, or recognised in Portugal for 5 years and issued 10 years ago) and presents the RIC certificate. The tutor cannot be a driving instructor or examiner.
Does the tutor need to take this training?
No. The MM Ouressa training is optional and not required to be a tutor. It helps you prepare better to supervise the learner.
How much does it cost and how long does it take?
€90, in 3 hours: 2 hours online and 1 hour in person with the learner and the instructor.
Which vehicle can be used?
A vehicle identified with a sticker, with the handbrake within the tutor's reach and with third-party liability insurance covering damage caused by the learner.
Who is responsible for offences and damage?
The tutor, for damage and offences committed by the learner during supervised driving, unless they result from the learner disobeying the tutor's instructions.
Is there a minimum number of kilometres?
No. There is no minimum number of kilometres in supervised driving.
Where can the learner drive?
They may not drive on motorways or carry passengers. They should avoid busy roads and times, and local councils may set areas where supervised driving is not allowed.
Do journeys need to be logged?
It is not compulsory. But MM Ouressa has an app to help the tutor follow the learner's practice.
Does the school keep supporting the learner?
Yes. The learner remains enrolled at the school, which notifies IMT of the tutor and puts the learner forward for the test.
