When you need to renew
- Deadline
- You should apply in the 6 months before your licence expires.
- Cars and motorcycles (Group 1)
- Renewal follows the ages set by law, regardless of the expiry date printed on the licence: every 15 years, then at 60, 65 and 70 and, after that, every 2 years. The exact ages depend on when you got your licence.
- Heavy vehicles (Group 2)
- More frequent renewals, always with a medical certificate and, from age 50, a psychological assessment.
- Expired licence
- If more than 2 years have passed, renewal depends on a special test. See the Special Test page.

What you need
What do you need to bring?
- Current driving licence
- Identity document showing residence in Portugal (for example, Citizen Card)
- Portuguese tax number (NIF)
- Electronic medical certificate, when required: for cars and motorcycles, from age 60; for heavy vehicles, always
- Psychological assessment certificate, for heavy vehicles from age 50
The doctor sends the medical certificate to IMT electronically.

Licence renewal
If you need them, the medical certificate (€40) and psychological assessment (€60) can also be done at the school.
When should I renew my licence?
In the 6 months before it expires. The ages depend on the licence group and when you got it; we will check with you.
Do I need a medical certificate?
For cars and motorcycles, from age 60. For heavy vehicles, always. You can do it at the school.
My licence has already expired. What now?
Up to 2 years, you can still renew. After more than 2 years, you need a special test.

We do the medical certificate and psychological assessment, and help you with the application.
How much does it cost?
€60. From age 70, you get a €15 discount: €45.
