TVDE Course — Initial Training
Start your path to working as a TVDE driver.
- 50 hours

What it is for
What you will be able to do.
To drive on platforms such as Uber or Bolt, you need the TVDE Driver Certificate (CMTVDE), issued by IMT.
This course is the mandatory training to apply for it. After the course you take the final IMT assessment and, if you pass, you apply for the certificate.
The course alone does not allow you to start working: you need your CMTVDE issued and to be registered with a platform operator.

Frequently asked questions
Questions about TVDE — Initial Training
Can't find the answer? Ask us on WhatsApp.
Do I need to have held my licence for 3 years?
Yes. You must have held a category B driving licence for more than 3 years, with Group 2 endorsement.
What is Group 2?
It is an endorsement on your licence that requires a medical certificate and a psychological assessment, as for professional drivers. We handle everything at the school: the endorsement costs €60, plus the medical certificate (€40) and the psychological assessment (€60).
Does the TVDE course have a test?
Yes. After the course you take a final assessment at IMT or at an authorised test centre: 30 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes. To pass you need at least 27 correct answers. Without passing you cannot apply for the CMTVDE.
Can I train online?
Yes, the theory part is online. The course also includes practical training.
What happens if I fail the test?
You can ask to retake the assessment within the period set by IMT. Talk to us and we will help you prepare for the next attempt. Check the exact retake period with IMT, as it may be adjusted by regulation.
Do I need to speak Portuguese to be a TVDE driver?
Yes. Under Law no. 59/2026, in force since 1 September 2026, the course now includes checking a functional command of Portuguese suited to the activity. The law does not set a specific level (such as A2): the criteria and procedure will be defined by ordinance. Until then, it is best to check the details with IMT.
What changed in TVDE law in 2026?
Law no. 59/2026 of 25 August came into force on 1 September 2026. The main changes: checking functional command of Portuguese in the initial training; taxis may also operate on TVDE platforms if they meet the same requirements; new rules on maximum vehicle age, with a wider exception for fully electric vehicles; changes to the identification sticker, in-vehicle video recording and data sharing; and adjustments to penalties and dynamic pricing. The 5-year validity of the CMTVDE, the 50 hours of initial training and the 30-question test already applied before and do not come from this law.
Which documents do I need?
Identity document and driving licence with Group 2 endorsement. For the CMTVDE application, also the criminal record certificate.
How do I get the CMTVDE?
Once you pass the final assessment, you apply through IMT Online and pay the €30 fee.
How long is it valid?
5 years. To renew, you take an 8-hour periodic training course before it expires.
Can I start working straight after the course?
No. First you need to pass the final assessment, have your CMTVDE issued and be registered with a platform operator.
