What it is for
What you will be able to do.
ADR is the European agreement governing the road transport of dangerous goods, such as gas, paints, packaged fuels or chemicals.
Anyone who drives vehicles carrying these goods needs the ADR certificate. The Basic course covers transport in packages; for tanks you need the specialisation.

- A valid Portuguese driving licence
- Citizen Card or residence permit
- Electronic medical certificate and psychological assessment, when required — we do both at the school. If you hold a heavy vehicle licence and are over 50, or got your C or C+E licence in the last 5 years, you do not need the medical certificate or the psychological assessment. If you hold a heavy vehicle licence and are aged 40 to 49, you need the psychological assessment.

01Risks and classes of dangerous goods
Main types of hazard, environmental protection and classification.
02Signage and documents
Orange plates, hazard labels and transport documents.
03Loading, unloading and stowage
Precautions, mixed-loading prohibitions and packing.
04Prevention and emergency measures
Mandatory equipment, what to do in an accident, and instructions in writing.
05Practical exercises
First aid, firefighting and use of protective equipment.

How much does it cost?

What is ADR?
It is the European agreement on the international carriage of dangerous goods by road, which also applies in Portugal.
Who needs the ADR certificate?
Drivers of vehicles carrying dangerous goods above the exemption limits.
Which goods can I transport?
With ADR Basic, dangerous goods in packages. It does not cover tanks.
Does the course include practical work?
Yes, practical emergency and safety exercises.
Is there a test?
Yes, at IMT, after the training.
How long is it valid?
5 years.
Does ADR Basic allow me to drive tankers?
No. For tanks you need the ADR Tanks specialisation.
How do I apply for the ADR card?
Once you pass the test, you go to an IMT counter with the completed Form 5 (Modelo 5) and the documents, and pay the €30 fee. You can also apply through IMT Online, but the card arrives faster if you apply at the counter.
Do I need a medical certificate and psychological assessment?
